Pros & Cons
Pros
- Highly effective for relieving occasional constipation.
- Works relatively quickly, often within 6-12 hours for oral tablets and 15-60 minutes for suppositories.
- Readily available over-the-counter without a prescription.
- Can be used for bowel preparation before certain medical procedures under doctor's guidance.
Cons
- Can cause significant abdominal cramps, pain, and discomfort.
- Not intended for long-term or daily use, as it can lead to 'laxative dependence' where your bowels may struggle to move on their own.
- Potential side effects include faintness, rectal burning (especially with suppositories), and electrolyte imbalances with overuse.
- Should not be taken within one hour of consuming milk or antacids, as these can cause the tablet to dissolve too quickly and lead to stomach upset.
